This year’s edition of the Rotary Dar Marathon was officially launched in Dar es Salaam with a press conference.  The iconic event will take place on the 14th of October (Nyerere Day) and this year will  celebrate its 10th anniversary.

An event that started humbly in 2009 with 700 participants, the 2018 Rotary Dar Marathon is expecting a grand attendance of 16,000 walkers and runners - making it the biggest and largest marathon in Dar es Salaam. There will be  four routes: 42.2km Run, 42.2km Cycling race, 21.1KM run, 21.1KM Cycling race, a traditional 9KM and a family fun walk of 5KM.

For the 10th time in a row, the guest of honor and Patron, the Past President His Excellency, Al Haji Ali Hassan Mwinyi will flag off the 9Km and the 5KM walk at 7.00am as he subsequently marched the 5Km walk and was awarded the oldest walker to finish in such good time in the past marathons.

The event will bring together a wide range of runners from Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda, South Africa, the Tanzanian military, police and the elite up-country runners to amateur runners out to prove to themselves they can do it. In addition to the excitement, SBC – Pepsi have confirmed to fully sponsor 2 top runners from the Rotary Dar Marathon to participate in the Beirut Marathon that will take place in November 2018.

For the past 9 years, the Rotary Dar Marathon has delivered several projects such as planting 27,000 trees, providing water and sanitation facilities to 27 schools, building a state of the art Rotary Pediatric Oncology facility at the Muhimbili National Hospital and refurbished and equipped the Rotary Entrepreneurship Center at the University of Dar es Salaam.

This year Rotary Dar Marathon theme continues to be “Healing Lives, Transforming Communities” and it is in its third year of raising funds to support the Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation (CCBRT) social enterprise project, which aims to expand revenues by constructing a larger and specialized clinic to fund the highly subsidized care in the CCBRT Disability Hospital. All funds raised through the RDM activities will be used to complete the construction of this specialized clinic and support provision of equipment and outfitting of the facility.
