In commemoration of World Polio Day which is observed every year on 24 October, the Rotary family in Arusha came together to organize a walk to raise awareness about the fight to eradicate the disease and fundraise towards this important cause. The Rotary Clubs of Arusha and Arusha Mt. Meru and Rotaract Clubs of St. Jude and of Arusha City worked together to organize the event - secure sponsorship, publicize the event and volunteer on the day. It was a wonderful example of all the members of one global family working together in the name of Rotary for our biggest cause.

On Saturday 26 October 2018, registration began at 6:30 a.m. and despite the rain which fell the previous week and  made a of the route very muddy and the chilly wind, a steady stream of Rotarians with their family and friends arrived ready to walk six kilometres. The youngest walker was six years old, with many senior citizens and even four dogs walked the entire route!

The Guest of Honour, Councillor Baraka Simon of Sanawari, addressed the walkers at the start, describing the Government of Tanzania as a partner in Rotary’s efforts to eradicate Polio and acknowledging the important work Rotary is doing in the community. During the walk, as part of our community outreach effort, Assistant Governor Adolf briefly spoke to local residents about Rotary and explained to them why we were walking,
At the end of the walk, Rotarians and their family and friends shared breakfast, reflecting on the route and already planning for next year’s Polio walk.
Sincere gratitude is extended to our generous sponsors: La Fiesta Lounge, Balton Tanzania, Siringet Water, Maasai Wanderings, Akaal Pharmacy, Sameer Parts Banana Wine Investments.
